In our last conversation, we explored Joshua 1:9 and the call to be strong and courageous as Christian entrepreneurs. We talked about facing fear, stepping into the unknown, and trusting that God is with us in every business decision. But courage is only the beginning of the journey.
Today, I want to take you deeper. Because once you’ve found the courage to step forward, the next question becomes: What do you do with the business God has placed in your hands?
The answer is found in Proverbs 16:3: “Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and he will establish your plans.”
What Does It Mean to Commit Your Work to God?
To commit means to entrust completely. It’s not just praying over your business once and moving on. It’s a daily, intentional act of surrendering your plans, your strategies, your goals, and even your failures into God’s hands.
As entrepreneurs, we’re wired to be doers. We create plans, set goals, and push forward with determination. But this scripture reminds us of a powerful truth: our plans succeed not because of our effort alone, but because God establishes them.
Commitment to God in business looks like:
- Seeking His direction before making major decisions – not after
- Inviting Him into your daily operations – the meetings, the emails, the client calls
- Trusting His timing – even when growth feels slow
- Surrendering control – acknowledging that He is the ultimate CEO of your enterprise
The Promise: He Will Establish Your Plans
Notice the scripture doesn’t say, “Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and He might help you out.” It says He will establish your plans. That’s a promise.
But here’s the key: the plans He establishes may not always look like the plans you started with. When you truly commit your work to God, you’re giving Him permission to redirect, refine, and even completely reshape your vision.
I’ve experienced this firsthand. There have been moments in my entrepreneurial journey where I had everything mapped out—the strategy, the timeline, the expected results. But when I brought those plans to God in genuine surrender, He showed me a better way. Sometimes it meant pivoting. Sometimes it meant waiting. Sometimes it meant letting go of what I thought I needed in order to receive what He knew I needed.
Established plans are God-aligned plans. They’re built on a foundation that won’t crumble when challenges come. They’re infused with divine wisdom that goes beyond our limited understanding. They’re sustained by His provision, not just our hustle.
Practical Ways to Commit Your Business to God
So how do we live this out practically? Here are some ways to commit your entrepreneurial work to the Lord:
1. Start Your Day with Surrender
Before you check your emails or dive into your to-do list, spend time in prayer. Surrender your agenda to God. Ask Him to order your steps, guide your conversations, and give you wisdom for the decisions ahead.
2. Invite God into Your Planning Sessions
Whether you’re setting quarterly goals or brainstorming a new product launch, invite the Holy Spirit into the process. Pray over your plans. Ask God to reveal what aligns with His purpose and what doesn’t.
3. Hold Your Plans Loosely
Commit to your vision, but hold it with open hands. Be willing to pivot when God redirects. Remember, His ways are higher than ours (Isaiah 55:9). What feels like a detour might actually be the divine route.
4. Steward with Integrity
Committing your work to God means operating with honesty, excellence, and integrity in every transaction. It means treating employees, clients, and competitors with the love of Christ. Your business practices should reflect your faith.
5. Give God the Glory
When success comes—and it will—point back to the One who established your plans. Let your business be a testimony of God’s faithfulness, provision, and wisdom.
When Plans Don’t Go as Expected
Let’s be honest: sometimes we commit our plans to God, and things still fall apart. The client says no. The funding doesn’t come through. The launch flops.
In those moments, remember this: God’s establishment of your plans doesn’t always mean immediate success by worldly standards. Sometimes He’s establishing character in you. Sometimes He’s closing one door to open another. Sometimes He’s protecting you from something you couldn’t see.
Commitment isn’t a formula for instant results. It’s a posture of trust that says, “God, I believe You’re working even when I can’t see it. I trust Your plan over my own.”
The Difference Between Hustle and Surrender
There’s a tension here that every Christian entrepreneur must navigate: the balance between working hard and surrendering control.
God doesn’t call us to be passive. He calls us to be faithful stewards who work with excellence (Colossians 3:23). But He also calls us to recognize that our success is not solely dependent on our effort.
You can hustle yourself into burnout, or you can commit your work to God and labor from a place of rest—knowing that He’s the one who brings the increase (1 Corinthians 3:6-7).
This is the beautiful paradox of faith-based entrepreneurship: we work as if everything depends on us, but we trust as if everything depends on God. Because ultimately, it does.
A Prayer for Today
Lord, I commit my business to You today. Every plan, every goal, every dream—I place it in Your hands. I surrender my need to control the outcome and trust that You will establish what aligns with Your purpose. Give me the wisdom to seek Your direction, the humility to follow where You lead, and the faith to trust Your timing. Let my work be a reflection of Your glory. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Moving Forward with Confidence
Entrepreneur, you don’t have to carry the weight of your business alone. You were never meant to. God is inviting you into a partnership where He provides the wisdom, the resources, and the direction—and you provide the obedience and the action.
Be strong and courageous, yes. But also be surrendered. Commit your work to the Lord, and watch Him establish plans beyond what you could ask or imagine.
