“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” – Joshua 1:9 (NIV)
As entrepreneurs, we face uncertainty every single day. Will this product launch succeed? Will the funding come through? Can we make payroll this month? Will customers respond to our new direction? The questions can feel endless, and the weight of responsibility can be crushing.
But God speaks directly into our fear and uncertainty with a powerful command: Be strong and courageous.
This Is Not a Suggestion—It’s a Command
Notice that God doesn’t say, “Try to be strong if you feel like it” or “Be courageous when circumstances look good.” He commands it. Why? Because courage isn’t about the absence of fear—it’s about obedience in the presence of fear.
When God spoke these words to Joshua, he was about to lead an entire nation into unknown territory. The task was massive. The obstacles were real. The pressure was immense. Sound familiar?
God knew Joshua would need more than a pep talk. He needed a promise: “The Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”
You’re Not Alone in the Uncertainty
The most powerful part of this verse isn’t the command to be strong—it’s the reason we can be strong. God Himself promises to be with us. Not just watching from a distance, but actively present in every meeting, every decision, every pivot, and every setback.
Scripture reinforces this truth again and again:
Deuteronomy 31:6 – “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.”
Isaiah 41:10 – “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”
Psalm 46:1-2 – “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea.”
Courage in Action for Entrepreneurs
What does biblical courage look like in your business today?
- Making the hard decision you’ve been avoiding because you trust God’s guidance more than popular opinion
- Taking the next step even when you can’t see the entire staircase
- Staying faithful to your calling when revenue is slow and critics are loud
- Choosing integrity over shortcuts, even when it costs you in the short term
- Pivoting with wisdom instead of panicking when plans don’t work out
Remember what Paul wrote in Philippians 4:13: “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Not through your own willpower, your perfect strategy, or your flawless execution—but through Christ.
When Fear Whispers, Remember This
Uncertainty will come. Markets will shift. Challenges will arise. But God’s presence is the constant that never changes.
As Proverbs 3:5-6 reminds us: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.”
You don’t need to have it all figured out. You just need to stay close to the One who does.
A Prayer for Today
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for the reminder that I don’t walk this entrepreneurial journey alone. When uncertainty clouds my vision and fear grips my heart, help me remember Your promise to never leave me nor forsake me.
Give me the strength to be courageous—not because I’m confident in myself, but because I’m confident in You. Help me make decisions rooted in faith, not fear. Guide my steps, direct my plans, and use my business for Your glory.
When I’m tempted to lean on my own understanding, draw me back to Your Word. When obstacles seem insurmountable, remind me that You are my refuge and strength. When I feel weak, be my source of power.
I surrender my business, my plans, and my fears to You today. Lead me wherever You want me to go, and give me the courage to follow.
